Grouse Grind Reopens For 2014

Grinders! Are you ready?!?!

The Grouse Grind is reopening for the 2014 summer season.

The 2.9 kilometre hike has been receiving its annual upgrade over the last few weeks, as choppers fly in the needed materials to make repairs to the trail.

The vertical hike, one of the most popular in the Greater Vancouver area, is a competitive training ground for many locals and visiting amateurs.

The average time is between 90 and 120 minutes, but for most veterans, any time worth consideration is well under an hour.

For those of you up for the hike, we hope you’ve been hitting your gym’s stairmaster in preparation. But more importantly, we hope you have been getting the rest you need. Sleep is one of the most important parts of any training regime. Eight to nine hours a night is optimal. Any more or any less and you could be turning back at the 3/4 mark of the trail. We call that ‘the descent of shame.’ Kidding.

If you aren’t getting enough sleep these days, it could be your mattress. Simmons Mattress Gallery has a full showroom of beds that will provide you with an undisturbed, restful sleep – perfect for the North Shore’s ’steps of death.’

Always Room For Improvement

A number of our articles focus on people who are having trouble sleeping: new parents, over-stretched business professionals, shift workers, insomniacs. But what about that other huge demographic, the folks that believe they are receiving a great night’s sleep each and every night?

We firmly believe a new mattress can improve everyone’s quest for the perfect sleep, even if you are comfortable with your current sleeping arrangement.

It’s all about potential. If you are heading to bed at reasonable hour, have adjusted your bedroom to an ideal sleeping atmosphere and have found a way to eliminate sleep anxiety, well, you’re ahead of the game. But is there room for further improvement?

We believe there is.

The pocket coil innovation in a Simmons Beautyrest limits almost all motion transfer between two partners. Small disturbances that may subtly affect your sleep are removed. It’s as if you had the whole bed to yourself. The result: an extended period of uninterrupted rest, the perfect formula for increasing your potential energy for the following day.

Sleeping alone? A new Simmons mattress provides sleepers with the highest levels of comfort through plush fabric toppers, memory foam cushioning and pocket coil support. It is a pampered sleep experience; a five-star combination of luxury and practical innovation.

Give us the chance to take your nights to the next level. Visit our Broadway location to sleep-test a new Simmons mattress.

Cauliflower: The New ‘IT’ Vegetable

Move over Kale, foodies have their eyes on a new super vegetable for 2014: cauliflower. Mashed, grilled or boiled, broccoli’s albino cousin is set to see resurgence in popularity, according to those with their ‘ear’ to the vegetable trends. The low-carb veggie can be served as a hearty main dish or as a simple steamed side.

Pinterest is full of ways to manipulate cauliflower. One of the most imaginative transformations we came across was cauliflower pizza crust.

Nutritionally speaking, cauliflower offers a wide range of antioxidants, provides protein and is even a source of vitamin C. It is also said to be an excellent cancer preventing vegetable, offering nutritional support to many of the body systems connected to preventing cancer cells.

Seems to good to be true? Well there is one negative characteristic to cauliflower that should be mentioned, especially in a mattress blog. Eating cauliflower before bed, possibly as a late-night snack, could disrupt your sleep. Cauliflower is high in fiber, which can be great for your bowels, but ultimately takes an extended period to digest. Your body may still be wrestling with the digestive process as you try to catch some shut-eye. This could reduce your chances for a disturbance-free sleep.

Our suggestion is to stay away from ‘the white wonder’ at least three hours before hitting the mattress.

Vancouver Pride

Party preparations are underway for more than a week of planned Pride events. The colours of the rainbow will spill out over the West End from July 27th to August 4th, as Vancouver’s Pride Festival celebrates the active LGBTQ community in our city.

This is a special 35th anniversary for the festival, now seen as the fifth largest Pride event in the world. It is also the first year that the City of Vancouver has granted the festival ‘Civic Event Status’. What does that mean for Vancouver Pride? More Money! The festival was given a funding increase of 345%.

This year’s party begins on July 27th with the Pride Run and Walk event; you won’t want to miss the disco water stations.

Following the race, Brockton Oval will host Picnic in the Park, Pride’s media launch party. There will be a beer garden, live music and of course foooood!

On Tuesday, July 30th, the Chevron Summer Film Series at Second Beach will show “Mamma Mia,” a rousing musical featuring the music of ABBA.

The legendary Davie Street Party will run on Friday, August 2nd. This year, the event will contain an all-ages portion from 4 pm till 7 pm. After 7 pm, the section from Bute to Burrard will open up to the licensed portion of the event. Superstar DJs are promised, as well as a special appearance by Jinkx Monsoon, winner of America’s next drag superstar.

Saturday will feature Thailand’s fireworks display, the final performance for this year’s Celebration of Light.

The official parade will take place on Sunday, starting at 12 pm on the corner of Robson and Thurlow. The rainbow of fun will march down Robson, take a left at Denman and continue up to Pacific. If you’re looking for the perfect vantage point, try the elevated Safeway patio at the corner of Denman and Robson. This spot also comes with a hilarious MC.

The parade ends at Sunset Beach, the sight of the festival grounds and marketplace.

Show your colours, but remember to make time for your mattress Vancouver. All that pride can be draining.

Change Up Your Sleep Position

Are you one to lie face first on the mattress, one hand dangling limply to the side, with the other under your pillow, with a slowly growing wet spot from your sideways, drooling face. Is that you? Legs outstretched at a particular angle. Ankles bent at odd degrees. The covers rolled under your legs to form a warm cocoon of humid fluids? Is this unusual position the only way you can sleep?

Chances are your awkward sleep style has been formed through years of dozing on a bed that’s the wrong size. You may have been trying to share a double with a partner for far too long after the honeymoon phase. You may have been stuck on a single and forced to conform to an awkward shape and frame.

Like a free-range chicken, you need to liberate yourself to a world without borders. Once you have stretched out on a king, you will never be able to treat yourself like a peasant again.

It’s time to change up your sleep position. Explore some new options. Take a test drive of the mattress Vancouver residents have been raving about for years – the Simmons Mattress Gallery Beautyrest Black. Only SMG has the Triple Edge comfort – you won’t find this at department stores. And the worst part is, it’s only available for another few short weeks.

Soon, Simmons Mattress Gallery will be shutting its doors for good, and you might not have a chance to enjoy this luxurious added feature only found in its mattresses. As a consolation – they are offering a 75% discount on new beds. So if you hurry down to their store on Broadway and Oak, you can have a chance to unlock yourself from an awkward sleep position, and enjoy the freedom of sleeping any which way you choose for the rest of your days (and nights).

Slang Teasers

Here are some colloquial and colourful expressions about sleep. It’s fun to explore word meanings, so let’s dig a little deeper to their origins.

Have you ever wondered how the term: hit the hay came about?
In 1902, mattresses were often sacks stuffed with straw or hay (hence the similar phrase ‘hit the sack’).

Catch 40 winks. This phrase is thought to have originated due to the utterly boring 39 parables that were passed down in church literature. Apparently they were so dreary, show couldn’t help to take a 40 wink nap afterward. Also 40 is thought to be a number with mystical powers.

http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/4/messages/1152.html

Did you know the expressions sleep like a log and sleep like a rock were predated by another similie?

The expression ’sleep like a top’ is quite old and is recorded from at least 1693, when it appeared in William Congreve’s The Old Batchelour:

“Should he seem to rouse, ’tis but well lashing him, and he will sleep like a Top.”

Counting sheep jumping over a wall goes back to 1854.

Sawing logs refers to the sound someone makes when snoring.

The idea of a Sandman goes all the way back to Hans Christian Anderson in 1841. The Danish fairy tale describes a mythical creature with a colour-changing silk jacket who sprinkles dust in the eyes of children to help them get dozy and fall asleep. He carries two umbrellas, one with colourful pictures so that good children can have wonderful dreams at night, and one with no images at all, so naughty children will sleep heavily without any dreams at all.

A bed from Simmons Mattress Gallery is a lot like a colourful umbrella that will usher you into a vivid world of dreams.

Helpful Guests

It’s great to have company. When friends and relatives that you haven seen in ages come in from out of town, it’s always fun to catch up, share stories and enjoy each others company.

However, people have their routines. And sometimes a houseguest can disrupt the usual flow. After about four nights, even the most polite and accommodating guests can become a mild irritation and the joyousness of the first few nights can turn dreary.

This is too bad, because with visits so infrequent, it’s best to make the most of the positive times, and eliminate any chance of friction.

The solution, for some, is to have uncomfortable beds for guests. But what kind of host does such a thing? It’s rather cruel.

A better solution is to have a happy, helpful guest. Give them a great bed and they will be inclined to stay longer. Then you can put them to work.

A helpful guest is a great guest. When the pleasantries have all been said, you can get them babysitting the kids, or tending the garden or helping you mend the fence.

The only way to keep a guest around long enough to endure a bit of back-breaking labour is to ensure that they have a soft bed to rest in each night. If your bed is better than theirs at home, you might even secure yourself a free workforce in family help.

There has never been a better time to stock up on comfortable beds for your guests. Simmons Mattress Gallery is having a Close Out Mattress Sale, with beds up to 75% off.

As the name implies, this sale won’t last forever, and once the remaining models are gone, so is your chance at free help around the house.

So don’t delay and visit Simmons at 1001 West Broadway today.

So Long, Farewell

Simmons Mattress Gallery is closing its doors for good.

It’s been great to service Vancouver and Coquitlam (and for a while Victoria and Nanaimo) but the days of SMG are no more.

To make our final goodbye a little less painful (and a lot more drawn out) we hare hosting a Close Out Mattress Sale.

It’s a one-time event that will feature our amazing Simmons mattresses on sale for as much as 75% off.

Everything must go, because once we shut off the lights for the last time, the Simmons Mattress Gallery will left to rest forever.

So, before it’s too late, make your way down to 1001 West Broadway for our downtown Vancouver location or 101 Schoolhouse Street in Coquitlam to find a sale to cap off almost 15 years of business.

This could be your last chance to buy a bed with the Triple Edge that only Simmons Mattress Galleries offer. Because we close SMG, Simmons is going to stop making that product.

And it’s really good one. Plus at 75% off, you can’t go wrong. So take this chance to say goodbye, and enjoy the savings of a lifetime.

Married Against Your Will

Today (March 18th, 2013) the BC Government announced that any couple, hetrosexual or otherwise, that has been co-habiting a home for two years or more is officially married in the eyes of the law.

Common law partners will see an equal division of assets, visitation rights with children as well as a sharing of debt should they separate. They will be given the same power of attorney as married couples, the same rights of not testifying in court if it came to that, and the same status in the eyes of the CRA.

However, this supposed equality comes at a price. What of those who don’t want to be ‘married in the eyes of the law’? What ever happened to making your own decisions on what the nature of a relationship should be? Can we expect to see a slew of crazy court cases between jilted exes and roommates in the next few months?

In the world of mattresses Vancouver stores are anticipating an influx of couples buying new beds. After all, in for a penny, in for a pound, and if your two-year shack-up has turned into a full-blown marriage, you might as well splurge on a good bed.

Right now Simmons Mattress Gallery has Beautyrests on sale for up to 75% off. It’s a Close Out Sale and if you get your roommate, er girlfriend, rather wife down here with you, it’s the perfect time to choose a luxurious bed for your ‘honeymoon’ and happily ever after.

Kerrisdale Mattress Store

If you think that Kerrisdale does not have the breadth to satisfy all of your shopping needs, you are not alone. There are many fantastic boutique stores, coffee shops and local outfits, but there is one thing missing – a specialized Kerrisdale mattress store.

Sure, you can get a small selection of Simmons Beautyrest mattresses at some of the stores on 41st, but it’s hard to find a specific, exclusively Simmons retailer.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t one nearby. Simmons Mattress Gallery is only 5.6 km down the road. Simply drive down 41st to Oak, hang a left, and keep driving 32 more blocks until you hit Broadway. According to Google Maps it should take you 11 minutes.

At Simmons Mattress Gallery you will find that mattress Vancouver retailers wish they had, but never have – The Triple Edge Beautyrest. Only SMG can carry the Simmons Triple Edge. So be sure to ask for this signature beauty by name.

Another interesting note, if you search for mattress Kerrisdale on Google.ca, you will see that Simmons Mattress Gallery is already at the top. So that has to tell you something.

For the next short while Simmons is having a Close Out Sale. Everything must go. We are offering mattresses for up to 75% off! This offer is not to be missed, because it will (obviously) never happen again.

Mattresses As Art

A young local artist from the Sunshine Coast, Heather Passmore, has recently sold one of her paintings to the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG). Beyond encouraging young, local artists, Simmons Mattress Gallery is impressed by this because her painting was entitled Mattress #3.

Her strange images depict the lives of the poor and homeless in downtown Vancouver. The canvasses she uses are old mattress covers that she has found in dumpsters on the Lower East Side, cleaned (we hope, yuck!), and painted on.

Many of the mattreses were discarded during the Olympics when the homeless were displaced, or because of the bedbug epidemic that is striking that area of Vancouver.

She strives to show the loneliness of single rooms, where a mattress is often the only or dominant peace of furniture.

If you want to see the famous painting of the mattress Vancouver Art Gallery will be exhibiting it along with more of Heather Passmore’s work.

If the professionalism of the sales staff is not enough to make you go from Chilliwack to Coquitlam, consider the pricing.

Currently, Simmons Mattress Gallery in Coquitlam is having a Beautyrest Sale with queen sets for as low as $699. That’s incredible. They have mattresses bargain priced at up to 60% off.

So if you are looking for a mattress store in Chilliwack, look a little further, and you’ll find the perfect place for your new bed.

Abbotsford Mattress Store

44 minutes. That’s it. If you want to get a top quality mattress you only need to drive to Coquitlam. It’s probably something you do once a week or so anyway.

Sure, there are mattress stores in Abbotsford, so why would you drive the extra mile? Because we do the same.

At Simmons Mattress Gallery, they have the least pushy salespeople out there.  They are informative, patient and they are there to help you answer your questions. Located at 1001 Schoolhouse St, Simmons is not technically an Abbotsford mattress store, but it is the best!

If the professionalism of the sales staff is not enough to make you go from Abbotsford to Coquitlam, consider the pricing.

Surrey Mattress Store

Surrey isn’t that far from Vancouver, BC. Probably, most people who live in Surrey commute to work in the city each morning. And return home each afternoon. Surrey is a beautiful little nook for those who love the city but want more. The lawn. The acreage. The neighbourhood.

Can’t say much about the Surrey mattress stores though.

Just because you live further from the city, doesn’t mean you need to disadvantage yourself. You can still have the best of both worlds.

Demand more from your Surrey mattress store, nothing about your existence out here has been a compromise, so why should your mattress, or selection of mattress, or choice of bed?

One of the most important things to remember about Surrey, BC is that it is actually very close to Vancouver. If you chose to live there, you want the amenities, the shows, the sports and the action – but at an arm’s length. The same can be said for having what is best in the west. There is no need to settle for an inferior mattress and a lesser night’s sleep, when it is possible to pick up a Simmons Beautyrest for up to 60% off on your way back from work.

If you are already in Vancouver five days a week – make the most of it. Go to Simmons Mattress Gallery on 1001 West Broadway and get yourself the finest bed. If you don’t have a truck, or a means to carry it, Simmons can arrange for that as well.

Deep Cove Mattress Store

There is only one Deep Cove mattress store that stocks exclusively Simmons mattresses. That store is Vancouver mattress store, Simmons Mattress Gallery.

Why is it important to stock only the best brand? Simply put, we want to have the deepest selection of only top quality beds. That bed would be the Simmons.

Everyone has their personal preference level for what makes a comfortable night’s sleep. No two people are alike. So instead of being forced into an inferior brand just because you like a model that is not a traditional bestseller – Simmons Mattress Gallery has that model ready for you, in premium brand, no less – the Beautyrest.

If you live on Vancouver Island and you need a good bed, drop by Simmons Mattress Gallery at 1001 Broadway (and Oak) today.

Port Moody Mattress Store

Port Moody isn’t that far from Vancouver, BC. Probably, most people who live in Port Moody commute to work in the city each morning. And return home each afternoon. Port Moody is a beautiful little nook for those who love the city but want more. The lawn. The acreage. The neighbourhood.

Can’t say much about the Port Moody mattress stores though.

Just because you live further from the city, doesn’t mean you need to disadvantage yourself. You can still have the best of both worlds.

Demand more from your Port Moody mattress store, nothing about your existence out here has been a compromise, so why should your mattress, or selection of mattress, or choice of bed?

One of the most important things to remember about Port Moody, BC is that it is actually very close to Vancouver. Heavy Heads Need Good Beds

When you are tired, nothing is worse than not being able to sleep. Sometimes, you’re over-tired. You’ve been up for so long that your body just can’t seem to throw the switch over into sleep mode. Suddenly, everything is uncomfortable. You become sensitive to everything. Your pillow is too lumpy. There’s sand in the sheets. You can feel every itch on your body and you pray that ain’t bugs.

If you have an old mattress you can feel the springs digging in, and your water moves to the side in the glass as your bed tilts more than a pinball machine. It’s impossible to sleep when you’re over-tired on a rotten, uncomfortable bed.

When you have a heavy head, you need a good bed. You need the best quality mattress at a top value price. For a premium mattress Vancouver professionals Simmons Mattress Gallery have Besityrests now on sale for up to 60% off.

If you have a heavy head, give it a soft landing.

BC Mattress Store

Simmons Mattress Gallery has locations in Coquitlam, BC and Vancouver, BC. You can find us right in the heart of Vancouver at 1001 West Broadway and Oak Street. We’re on the corner. Our other store is at 101 Schoolhouse Street in Coquitlam, BC. It’s just off Lougheed Highway by the Cactus Club there. There is plenty of parking and there are other clothing and household stores in the area if you want to do some general shopping while you’re there.

Our Broadway location also has free parking if you use our underground parking lot (just take the first west corner after you go north down Oak).  Bring your ticket into the store and we’ll redeem it.

If you are looking for a BC Mattress Store and you do not live in Vancouver or Coquitlam, just give us a call. We have sold mattresses over the phone before, and if you peruse our website, you will see that we have a solid selection of beds that we can ship all across BC.

We’re pretty sure there’s not another BC Mattress Store with the same sale we have on right now. Our Midsummer Beautyrest Mattress Sale has top-of-the-line Beautyrest mattresses priced to sell at up to 60% off.

So if your local BC mattress store is as close as Richmond, or as far away as Fort St. James, rest assured that we can accommodate your needs with a premium, local BC mattress.

Also note, that all of our mattresses are locally made, right here in BC.

Delta Mattress Store

If you are looking for a mattress store in Delta, don’t rule out a quick jaunt to 101 Schoolhouse Street in Coquitlam. Simmons Mattress Gallery has a location there, and they can offer you great prices on quality Simmons beds that you might not find in Delta.

It’s only a thirty-minute drive, and because it’s in an outdoor mall, there is plenty of free parking.

For a part of the city that is built on sand, you think Delta would be more concerned about foundations. We carry those too. A good foundation can help your mattress breathe, and keep it at a suitable height for springing in and out of bed. Also, it’s nice to sit on the edge of your bed when you put on your socks.

Right now, there’s a 60% off Midsummer Beautyrest Sale going on. It’s for one month only, though, so don’t miss out.

North Vancouver Mattress Store

It only takes 23 minutes to go from North Vancouver to Vancouver to get a new mattress. That will be the best 23 minutes you will have ever spent in your life.

If you jump in your truck, you can be at 1001 West Broadway before you have time to figure out what you’re having for dinner. You can pick out your mattress, and the friendly staff at Simmons Mattress Gallery can even help you organize delivery to your North Vancouver home (if you don’t have a truck).

If you prefer a North Vancouver mattress store, keep this in mind. While they might be closer, they won’t have the same sales.

Right now, Simmons is having its Midsummer Beautyrest Sale. You can get a mattress for as little as 60% off.

So if you were thinking about going for a movie downtown, why not save yourself some time, and just go mattress shopping instead. You could have a new, comfortable mattress in half the time – and you’ll feel much more relaxed.

Giving Your Bed That Showroom Feel

When you try bed in showroom it feels as it should – broken in. After all, we’ve had numerous shoppers test it out, not to mention a few staff who’ve caught a few zs on their breaks. Just kidding.

If you get your new bed and it doesn’t feel exactly as it did in the showroom, that’s normal too. Give it time. A month or so. Once you’ve broken it in to the same level as it was on the showroom, you’ll remember why you bought it in the first place.

If you want it to feel that way, right away, you’ll need a floor model to have one that feels like it’s on the floor.

Burnaby Mattress Store

Do you live in Burnaby? Are you satisfied with your Burnaby mattress store? If not, we have a good option for you.

Simmons Mattress Gallery has two mattress stores equidistant from your Burnaby location.

One is at the corner of Broadway and Oak – a mere 23 minute drive from your fine Burnaby central.

1001 West Broadway, Vancouver BC

The other is in Coquitlam, about the same amount of time away.

101 Schoolhouse St., Coquitlam, BC

So, if you look in either direction, you can get a quality Simmons Beautyrest in less than 25 minutes.

Worried about what your Burnaby mattress store is going to think when you skip on over to a Simmons Mattress Gallery? Don’t worry, we won’t tell them.

Richmond Mattress Store

It takes ten minutes to run down to the store to buy a litre of milk. If you want to go to a movie downtown, you’re looking at an hour. Mattress shopping, however is a nice compromise between the two.

If you jump in your car (or get on the Canada Line) you can be at 1001 West Broadway in less than 25 minutes. You can pick out your mattress, and the friendly staff at Simmons Mattress Gallery can even help you organize delivery to your Richmond home.

If you prefer Richmond mattress stores, keep this in mind. While they might be closer to getting a litre of milk, they will be more like a movie when it comes to the details of  shipping and handling. It all takes time when you are not in the good hands of the mattress professionals. They are conscientious and thoughtful. Your order will not be misplaced, your bed will not end up in the wrong part of Richmond, and you will get the mattress you bought – for a whole lot less than if you were going to buy it in a Richmond mattress store.

So if you were thinking about going for a movie downtown, why not save yourself some time, and just go mattress shopping instead. You could have a new, comfortable mattress in half the time – and you’ll feel much more relaxed.

Richmond

Whistler Mattress Store

Let’s face it, if you are looking for a Whistler mattress store, you are either going to run up against a super expensive chain, a wildly marked up local version of your favourite Beautyrest. It takes a village to ship in every stick of furniture, and mattresses are no exception. Just like the food prices up north, you pay an exorbitant sum for that convenience.

A better option – pick up your bed the next time you are in Vancouver. You can’t get much more central than Simmons Mattress Gallery’s store on Broadway and Oak. You won’t need to fight downtown traffic, either. Or pay $12/hour to park. In fact, we offer free parking downstairs.

You’re going to be in Vancouver at some point. Say it’s to take a plane somewhere. Perfect. Simmons Mattress Gallery is exactly halfway between Whistler and YVR. We’re right on Oak street.

We don’t recommend picking up your mattress on the way to the airport, but coming back, why not? What better way to get home than on a brand-new bed.

So if your local Whistler mattress store is a bit pricier than you’d like, consider our Truckload Sale with beds up to 60% off.

We’re more than happy to help you outfit your Whistler home, cottage or chalet with the best beds in the west.

Wedding Gift Ideas

How fun. Someone in your family getting married. While your heart may quiver and eyes glaze over with nostalgia that lump in your throat starts to juggle like an apple when reality kicks in. What am I ever going to get them?

Picking a wedding present can be an arduous task. Sure, there are wedding registries. But how mundane. How boring to give a faceless and forgettable gift.

A better idea is a bed. Even if the lovely couple has been shacked up for five years – who cares? They’re going to need a proper wedding mattress as white as that elegant dress to spend the rest of their lives on together (or the first decade anyway).

It’s a gift that no one forgets. And it looks much more expensive than it is: now at Simmons Mattress Gallery we are selling Beautyrest Queens for only $896.

New Westminister mattress

The difference between a mediocre mattress that you’re going to moan about for years and a bed that you’ll love until your hair’s gone blue is only sixteen point two minutes.

To find a mattress New Westminster is not the place to be – but Coquitlam, a mere 7.1 km away, has a Simmons Mattress Gallery.

Not only our the New Westminster mattress stores more expensive, their brand names doesn’t compare to the luxuriant Beautyrest. And the salespeople are knowledgeable and not pushy. All in all if you’re looking for a mattress in New Westminster, take the quick trip to Coquitlam, and we can help you there.

Mattress Langley

If you live in Langley, BC and you are in search of a mattress store in Langley to get the best deal on a bed, then we have some good and bad news for you.

Simmons Mattress Gallery is offering up to 60% off brand-new beds. This is a great opportunity to get a Simmons mattress.

However, to get this deal on a mattress Langley residents will have to drive a little. The closest mattress store with this kind of deal is Simmons Mattress Gallery in Coquitlam on 101 Schoolhouse Street. It’s just across the bridge – only 25.2 km away.

See this map for details.

Don’t Pay Now – Pay Later – How Other Countries Do It

If you buy a bed from Simmons Mattress Gallery, there are a variety of financing options you can make use of.

You can pay cash. We like this. Or, you can pay by credit card. This is also a perfectly acceptable option. We also offer financing. If you don’t want to pay for 6 months, you don’t have to.

But how do they do it in other countries?

Our correspondent in Buenos Aires has had some interesting discoveries about how transactions are handled in South America.

If you are paying rent. It has to be in US Dollars. It has been over 10 years since the economy crashed and the peso was violently devalued, but it has made enough landlords gun-shy enough to demand their rent in US currency. Problem is, it’s really hard to get. The banks don’t give it out. And even Western Union has greenbacks in limited supply. Apparently, the Argentina government scours your tax records to determine how many USDs you can have at any time. Crazy.

With inflation anywhere between 20 and 30%, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to hang onto money any longer than you have to. So people in Argentina buy like crazy. One strange discover was at the grocery store – now we may be mistaken here, but our writer down American under was pretty sure they were allowing him to charge his credit card in 3 payments. Put it this way, if you bought a $1000 Beautyrest, you could pay $333 now, $333 later and $334 three months from now. But when the cost of living is skyrocketing by 30%, all of a sudden that last payment seems like a 10% off deal.

Something to consider when 0% financing is on the table with a rapidly escalating inflation.

Note: If you need a mattress Vancouver store Simmons Mattress Gallery will give you a bed for even less than the Argentines. They are currently pricing Queen Beautyrests at $898.

Pick a card, any card.

Mattress Domino World Record Broken

And they said it couldn’t be done!

A strange group of Americans in less-than-flattering yellow and black outfits got together in New Orleans last weekend to beat the world record for the largest human mattress dominoes.

850 mattresses were used to accomplish the feat.

Was this record set by a weight watchers group that got distracted? We’re not sure. But some of them should have been using more than singles to pad their fall, if you get what we mean.

You can watch the action here.

Valentines Day Mattress Promotions in Buenos Aires

Mattress stores in Vancouver don’t really make the most of the Valentines holiday to sell beds. Down here in Buenos Aires they embrace the holiday wholeheartedly. Here are some examples of the Valentines Day sales they have in Argentina. This store is called Bed Time and it is a major player in the mattress scene below the equator.

Beds of the World

In different places of the world, you’ll find the way they build a mattress varies depending on climate and materials available.

For instance, in India, you’ll find Coir, or coconut husk mattresses. While it sounds a bit scratchy, it’s supposed to be rather nice.

In South America they prefer a foam mattress. North America, they have spring mattresses. (Also memory foam tops are quite popular.)

Comfort, well, that’s subjective. But personally, we like our Beautyrests. To find the comfort preference level that’s right for you, drop by a Simmons Mattress Gallery today.

Why do they even make Doubles?

King sized beds – once you’ve had one it’s hard to go back to sleeping crushed next to your partner on a queen. Nothing beats being able to sprawl out like a starfish and not even have your toes or fingertips touch the edges. Sure, they take up a lot of space in the bedroom, but that’s what bedrooms are for – beds. And they are nice.

Queens are okay. If you are in a relationship, it’s the bare minimum. If you aren’t, they make for an excellent sprawling single pad.

Singles I can see if you are smaller in stature, or if space is an issue. Really, all a guy or gal needs is a single. It’s not preferable, but it’s the bare minimum, and as the name implies, no one is asking you to share it with anyone.

But doubles? Really? They’re too small to share comfortably and not big enough to enjoy selfishly. So why even make them? If you are travelling and you find yourself on a double with your partner – the first thing you’ll ask is ‘why do they even make these things?’

If you’re thinking double, think twice, what you really want is probably a queen.

And on the topic of queens. Simmons Mattress Gallery is currently selling Beautyrest Queens for $898. That’s almost $2000 off the regular price!

Pregnant? Sleep While You Can.

If you are pregnant, congratulations! There is nothing as rewarding as ushering a little angel into this world. But being a new mom is not without its trying times. There are many little everyday issues that exist in your life that will soon become major every day issues.

One of the most important will be sleep.

The most common complaint of the new mother is that of exhaustion. It is very difficult to get the sleep you need when a newborn is waking you up every few hours to feed. Irregular sleep, combined with a litany of new tasks and responsibilities can put a heavy burden on the physical and mental well-being of new parents. New mothers have been known to fall into a depression because of the lack of sleep.

That is why it is important for new parents to maximize the sleep they get. If you are only going to get 4-5 hours a night, as opposed to the 8 you are accustomed to, make sure that every one of those hours counts. In other words, get yourself a good bed before the baby arrives. You can’t afford to be laying awake on an uncomfortable mattress when you know you only have a few hours until you are up again. The better the bed, the easier the journey.

When it comes time for a baby shower, maybe consider a bed fund instead of a diaper fund. Once the child arrives, sleep will become a more precious commodity than food, diapers or even toys. It is essential for every new mom’s survival.

Another thing to consider is bed rest. If you are in the final stages of your pregnancy, your doctor may suggest staying in bed. If this is the case, you will want to make sure that your days are as comfortable as possible with a good mattress.

Sleep and Mood

Studies have shown that mood is strongly affected by sleep deprivation.

A human’s well-being is intimately linked with how well they sleep at night. We are all familiar with the irritability we feel after a rough night’s sleep, but did you know that the damage can be even more pervasive? It has also been found that chronic insomnia can lead to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

The reverse is also true. Insomnia and difficulty sleeping is often an early symptom of depression. 15-20% of people diagnosed with insomnia will develop a major depression later on.

A good night’s sleep has restorative properties. If subjects reported feeling anxious or depressed, a good sleep was often able to ease their worries, tenseness and anxiety the next day. After several nights of sleeping well, many of the symptoms disappeared entirely.

Foul moods can be toxic. Misery loves company, so one person’s bad sleep can have a domino effect on all those around them, making everyone tense. To think all it could take is a good mattress to reverse this grouchy trend.

If you are sleeping poorly because of an old mattress, you are just torturing yourself and those around you. Simmons Mattress Gallery has Beautyrest Queens on sale for $898. For less than a thousand dollars you can be sleeping well every night, and getting rid of the lousy mood that is most likely causing you to make bad decisions, and could be costing you your mental (as well as physical) well-being.

Simmons Mattress Gallery Gets Greener

If you walk into our Coquitlam showroom you might notice something a little different. It’s not that woodland animals are bounding through the doors, or the springs in our beds have started to bloom flowers. But the place is looking a little greener – and brighter – much, much brighter.

Last week, Simmons Mattress Gallery replaced all the light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. This might not sound like much, but then you haven’t seen our showroom. The place is huge. And there are literally hundreds of light bulbs in there.

Using the traditional lights, Simmons was burning through 32,000 kw/hr. You can see our cheeks burning too. That’s a lot of power. So we decided to switch it up with new-fangled energy saving bulbs. Now, it’s estimated that Simmons Mattress Gallery will only use 12,000 kw/hr. That’s nearly one third of what we were using before.

The new bulbs are expected to last for ten years. And the store will recycle the old bulbs – in another store that is. Reusing is a better strategy than recycling the whole lot.

Breaking It In

You wouldn’t hit the trail in a pair of hiking boots you just bought. Not without expecting some blisters anyway.

They need to be broken in first. The leather needs to soften with a bit of use. Their shape needs to mould to familiar feet.

Same goes for mattresses.

You’ll notice a slight difference between the bed you selected in our showroom and the bed you have delivered.

That’s because the mattresses in the showroom have been broken over time – from the testing of shoppers like yourself.

Your bed will feel that way, eventually, just not right away. Don’t worry. Just give it time.

We usually suggest that our customers give their new beds a month or so to feel right. The bed will soften and get more comfortable to you over time.

You have 90 days to return. So wait until 2-3 month mark. The first month is still an adjustment period.

If you have any further questions about breaking in your new Simmons mattress, please do not hesitate to call us at: 604-733-5161 ‎

The Pull of the PuSh

One of the greatest festivals in Vancouver is the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, coming up this winter from January 15 through February 5, 2012. The festival presents innovative works in live performing arts over the course of three weeks. The festival aims to expose audiences to shows that are thought provoking, blend genres, and startle viewers.

The shows exhibited at the PuSh festival are meant to encourage dialogue and induce transformative experiences among attendees. Since its launch in 2003, as a joint venture of Rumble Productions and Touchstone Theatre, PuSh has become one of the most highly anticipated events for Vancouver audiences, artists and media. Initially a modest series of theatre presentations curated by Norman Armour and Katrina Dunn, the Festival took on a new life as a stand-alone entity in June 2005, with charitable status and its own administrative operations.

January 2009 marked the 5th installment of the PuSh Festival. There were 19 works in the main program and the launch of Club PuSh—a unique multi-disciplinary platform at Granville Island’s Performance Works that put the spotlight on indie bands and other cutting-edge performing artists of the Cascadia region. There were a total of 136 performances, involving 16 venues across the city. More than 24,000 people attended that year. For more information, visit the festival’s website at www.pushfestival.ca.

Innovate? In Your Dreams.

Some of the best ideas begin in dreams.

Inventors, artists, musicians and thinkers throughout history have reported that some of their biggest breakthroughs were the products of dream world experiences. Rene Descartes came up with the concept for the scientific method after something he experienced in a dream. Paul McCartney has said he heard the tune for the famous song, “Yesterday,” in a dream. Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” was inspired by a dream. Elias Howe got the idea to invent the sewing machine in a dream.

Dreams can be a great source of inspiration, but only if you remember them when you wake up. To increase the chances that your next great invention doesn’t slip away into your subconscious, it’s a good idea to write down what you remember about your dreams as soon as you wake up. Keep a notebook by the bed and jot down anything you remember, even incomplete images, occurrences or thoughts that don’t seem to make sense. Some people believe it’s easier to remember dreams that occur during the daytime while napping, although this idea is impossible to prove.

The quality of your sleep can increase the quality of your dreams. And the quality of your bed can increase the quality of your sleep. That means you might want to invest in a new bed. Visit Vancouver Mattress Store Simmons Mattress Gallery to check out the best brands at the best prices. Start dreaming up your next great idea tonight.

Fall For Vancouver

Well it looks as if summer is coming to a close in Vancouver. Fall is upon us, and with it another nine months of rain. Ugh.

However, there are a few events coming up in Vancouver this fall that can hopefully cheer you up.

Cinema – On September 28th there is the Vancouver International Film Festival. Prepare your eyes for some of the most cutting-edge and avant-garde cinema this side of the pond, as they screen films from 80 countries on 10 screens – it’s not to be missed.

Concerts – October is bringing a few fantastic bands to the city. Keep your eyes peeled and credit card handy for the likes of Flogging Molly, Kathy Griffin, Selena Gomez, Said The Whale, Bachman Turner and more.

Events – “I am Vancouver” is a presentation at  the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Learn about the history of the city and how Captain George found his way here in the first place. It ends this October, so it could be your last chance to check it out.

The Sleep Cycle App

Want to get the most restful sleep possible during the night?

Well, there’s an app for that.

It turns out that it’s not so much about how long you lay in bed. What is more important is when you wake from your slumber.

Researchers have discovered that those who wake during the lightest phase of their sleep cycle feel the most rested the next day.

So taking this knowledge, they’ve created an iPhone app that measures the amount you are moving at any given time during the night, and when nocturnal motions are at a minimum – it triggers the alarm clock to wake you up!

The technology is made possible by the accelerometer in the iPhone.

The app has seen resounding success, already climbing to the top of the App Store in Germany, Japan  and Russia.

To try it for yourself , simply download the Sleep Cycle App in the App Store for less than a dollar!

Hacking From the Rough

The Canadian Open returns to Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club this weekend. Some of the best in the game have already arrived in Vancouver and sampled Shaughnessy’s grueling fairways.

The talk surrounding the course is that the rough is extremely thick. Many in the field believe the difficulty of the course will level the playing field.

“I would say this is probably one of the toughest or the toughest course I have ever played,” said Anthony Kim, former U.S. Open champion. “I don’t think it’s so much the golf course length or the way it’s strategically laid out, it’s just that the rough is six or seven inches deep and we’re hacking out sideways.”

The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, Luke Donald will be trying to return to form, after missing the cut at last week’s British Open. Donald played the course on Wednesday and commented that the rough was an issue, but the length was the more daunting feature. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had that many yardages of 200 and over into a lot of these holes and the ball is going short.”

Whatever their gripe, the men will need all their clubs this weekend, not just their low irons and wedges.

The tournament concludes on Sunday at 3:00pm. Global, TSN and the Golf Chanel will be sharing the coverage.

The 11th

The Quiet Room

At home, the only people who have to deal with your nocturnal noises are your family and or your roommates. But what happens when you travel? Do the rest of the guests have to suffer through your snoring bouts, as the nasal noise reverberates around your room and out into the hall?

The Crowne Plaza hotel chain has created a room to minimize the effects of your snoring, so both you and your partner can enjoy a sound sleep. Anti-snoring pillows and white noise encourages your body to sleep quietly. With sound proofing on both the walls and headboards, noise that is made, is contained so that other patrons are unaffected.

Other popular hotel chains are implementing measures to identify and deter noisy sleepers. More than ten hotel chains in Europe and the Middle East are hiring night watchmen to act as snore patrollers. These men and women walk the halls and check for noise disruptions. When they find a culprit, they bang lightly on the door to wake the snorer, pulling him or her out of their slumber and temporarily relieving the noise.

The watchmen keep track of which patrons are being unintentionally disruptive. Like a medical annotation, your sleeping history follows you. After three disturbances, hotel staff can suggest an area of the hotel where noise is permitted.

Back home, on your Vancouver mattress, you can be as loud as you like; or as loud as your partner permits.

“Good Morning, Good Morning!”

Good morning! Two words that sneak from our lips, but often mean far too little.

What is a ‘good morning’? Is it a greeting, a statement of fact or a question?

Well if the Viagra commercials are to be believed, it is a state of being; a post-performance glow. It has gentlemen in suits leaping over hedges, bounding down sidewalks and freely swinging their briefcases.

According to The Beatles it is a mundane rundown of your average day, mixed with a flirty skirt and a barnyard serenade.

Here at Simmons Mattress Gallery, we believe a ‘good morning’ is the product of a peaceful night’s sleep on our superior, non-flip pocket coil mattress. Nothing prepares your mind, body and soul for taking on the new day than an undisturbed rest. And quite simply, that is what a Simmons mattress provides. Our Beautyrest line will provide more spring than any blue pill will.

Try a Simmons today and you will never look back. You will greet your staff with a boastful ‘How was your sleep last night? Mine was amazing!’ That is how to start the day. Leave the chickens and the pill popping to the ill informed.

"Now look to your right..."

Vancouver Earthquake Preparations

As the world tries to come to grips with the damage caused by the recent earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan, here at home, people are starting to fear that the next big quake could occur somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. This has many Lower Mainland residents thinking very seriously about their preparedness level.

To address these concerns, citizens can visit the British Columbia Earthquake Preparedness website for tips on what to have ready and what actions to take in the event of a massive earthquake. The site is an excellent resource for preparing your loved ones for an environmental disaster.

Remember to Hold On!

Here are a few quick tips for your family to work on:

1. Know the safe areas of your home that can be used for cover.

(heavy tables, desks, archways)

2. Know the dangerous areas of your home.

(near windows, beside large appliances, near shelves)

3. Signup for a first-aid course.

4. Plan and practice safe evacuation routes from your home.

5. Have a plan in place if your family is separated. Organize a contact number of a family member or friend who lives in another area of the Province.

6. Make sure every member of the family knows how to turn off the gas incase of a leak.

7. Have a list of emergency contacts posted near your main phone. You can also add these numbers to the contact list on your cellphones.

8. Prepare emergency supplies for at least 72 hours.

This should include: first aid kit, tarp or small tent, water (lots of it), water purification tablets, non-perishable food, flashlights, am/fm radio, batteries, toiletry items, fire extinguisher, wrench, shoes, gloves and if possible, sleeping bags.

Dare to Dream!

Dreams. They come to us at night while we sleep soundly. They float into our minds while we spend the day doing simple tasks. They infect our soul and force us to face the question: “What if?”

What if we went back to school for three years and improved our education?

What if we took a year off and moved our family to Chile for the experience?

What if we had only one day to live?

What if our family was increased by one?

What if we chased our artistic dream?

But for many, these questions, brought on by dreams, are stifled with the so-called ‘realistic advice’ of friends or family members. This is discouraging.

Dreams come to us because we know there is a better way to live, to enjoy each day, to find employment and to act on our passions. Don’t be discouraged by others. And never settle for average.

John Maxwell, a leadership author, claims, “being exceptional demands extra effort, sustained inspiration and uncommon discipline.” Fulfilling our dreams is never easy. So be prepared to fight for them. Your soul will thank you.

Nightly Attire

What do you wear to bed on a nightly basis? Simmons Mattress Gallery wants to know.

Each one of us has a certain bedtime uniform that we feel the most comfortable in after-hours. Some of us retire to our bed wearing half of what we wore that day. Others spend each night in pajamas. Others still, sleep in boxers and a t-shirt.

Feeling sexy? There is always that lingerie at the back of your sock drawer. Feel like a fabric hug? Pull out the hoodie from College. Cold feet? Those wool socks you bought for skiing in 2007 are great!

And then some of us feel the most comfortable with nothing on. Commando!

Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to conduct a poll of what the majority of British Columbians wear to bed. Join our Facebook group and post your answers on our wall. Following us on Twitter? Send us a message or @mention us on your own feed. Just give us a brief description of what you wear on a regular night when you go to sleep.

Feel like doing some mattress shopping in your nightly garbs? Bring them down, change in the back and try out some of the finest beds in the business in your most comfortable evening attire. We won’t judge.

(Is that a Tears For Fears concert shirt???)

Finding the Right Mattress For Your Pregnancy

Tossing and turning with a basketball glued to your stomach is a difficult task!

Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to make your pregnancy more comfortable. A quality spring mattress with a memory foam top is just the thing for finding the ideal sleeping conditions during your nine months of growth.

A Simmons non-flip pocket coil mattress will keep you properly supported through the entire night. With individual springs, your mattress will respond to your movements with soft fingers of compression. The coils will reduce motion transfer, so your partner can sleep through the night as well.

For an extra layer of comfort on top of your springs, take the memory foam option. Nothing moulds to your changing figure quite like memory foam.

You may find that you will require additional firmness at points during your pregnancy. Just remove the foam top and store it carefully in an elevated area of your closet.

One thing you definitely don’t want to invest in is a waterbed. Though the idea of floating while sleeping may seem intriguing, waterbeds do not supply nearly enough support for pregnant women. They can also be dangerously hard to get out or off of. Stay away from the 80’s fad and live in the present with the latest innovations from Simmons.

Sleep well ladies.

Sleep Through the Night

Canada’s Arcade Fire Takes Top Prize

Justin Bieber and Drake were denied Grammies this Sunday, but their more mature compatriots – Neil Young, Michael Bublé and the Arcade Fire – managed to nab a few of the show’s top awards.

Bieber and Drake both lost out to American bassist and vocalist, Esperanza Spalding, in the new artist category. This was a crushing blow to the Bieb Army and to the many fans of Degrassi: The Next Generation.

But it was the Arcade Fire from Montreal, who pulled off the biggest upset of the evening by taking home the award for album of the year. After the announcement of the award, the ensemble group played an encore of “Ready to Start,” with the ironic lyrics: “all the kids have always known / that the Emperor wears no clothes.” Guess they never thought their indie pop would ever land them on a stage with a naked Eminem.

Neil Young proved his resilience, winning in the best rock song category with his track “Angry World.” It was Neil Young’s first Grammy for music.

Bruce Allen’s protégé, Michael Bublé, took home the award for Best Traditional Pop Album, with “Crazy Love” and housewives across the globe swooned simultaneously.

Better luck next year Biebs!

Believe it America!

Village On a Diet

Three ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle are: exercise often, eat nutritious foods in appropriate quantities and get 7-8 hours of rest every night.

Now we have gone over the sleep factor in many of our blogs. We’ve explained all the positives that occur when your body is rested and we have touched on many of the negative effects of sleep deficiency. We have even discussed the downsides to oversleeping.

And it’s no secret, a new mattress will help you reach that 7-8 hours of needed rest.

But what about the other two, a healthy diet and daily exercise? Those, our dear readers, are up to the individual. We can only help you during your sleeping hours. The rest are up to you.

Looking for inspiration? Check out CBC’s new program, “Village on a Diet.” Shot on location in Taylor, British Columbia, “Village on a Diet” documents an entire town’s commitment to shedding one ton of excess weight.  There are 1,400 residents and it is estimated that at least 60% are overweight.

To help the Taylor residents meet their mark, the Canadian Broadcasters have supplied the town with two highly respected trainers from Vancouver; Mike Veinot and Garfield Wilson. Maria Thomas, who has signed on as the town’s dietician, joins Mike and Garfield.

The show airs every Monday at 9:00. So set the PVR to record it during your workout, or do some after dinner squats in front of the TV, and check out Taylor’s commitment to healthy living.

Just remember to be in bed by 10:00.

Good Luck Taylor!

Stay Strong This Cold Season

Cold symptoms have you missing work?

With the dramatic rise and fall of temperatures that we have been experiencing over the last few weeks, it’s a miracle that we aren’t all out with the sick bug. For those few who haven’t been affected, Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to provide a few strategies for retaining your health.

1. Wash your hands regularly.

-There is a great commercial for Science World, where these four business exec types meet up in an office and instead of shaking hands they each exchange open mouth deep throat greetings. The text reads: “shaking hands spreads more germs than kissing.” The final tag line: “Science World – We can explain.”

2. Eat healthy foods

-One more reason to stick to your New Years diet. Keep your immune system well nourished with a variety of fruits and veggies. Skip the McDonalds lunch.

3. Take a daily multivitamin

-Add it to your routine of things you do in the morning.

4. Drink lots of water

-Have your first glass with the vitamin. Then at least one glass with lunch and dinner. If you have a relatively strong bladder, drink another before bed.

5. Go to sleep early

-Nothing wears out your immune system like a lack of sleep. Fight the cold bug by tucking in a few hours early. If you can’t fall asleep, chances are you’re sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress. UPGRADE at Simmons Mattress Gallery and work through the winter strong and cold free.

Mattress Vancouver Stores – The Reason Behind The Silly Syntax

Ever noticed how mattress stores in Vancouver insist on calling themselves Mattress Vancouver Stores? It has a little to do with outright marketing and more to the way Google searches of these blogs.

Now, we’ve been trying to present you with informative and intelligent articles about things to do in Vancouver, and the exciting ways that you can keep this city your own.

However, the sad truth of the Internet is that most of the articles are read by search engine optimization spiders that find the relevance through syntax, and not necessarily relevance.

Here’s the skinny. Most people search for a Vancouver mattress store by typing in “mattress” first. This will take them to a page that has every mattress in the world. Hardly convenient if you are looking for a mattress store in Vancouver, and not London.  So, usually, the next search most will do is for “mattress Vancouver.”

It is for that very reason that mattress stores describe themselves at Mattress Vancouver Stores. Simmons Mattress Gallery included.

Ballet BC and Things That Go Creak in the Night

If Christmas carols crackling from shoddy speakers in supermarkets and teeming throngs of holiday shoppers have exorcised all Christmas cheer from your soul, then it might be time to lift your spirits with something with a little more substance and style.

Simply going to the playhouse to watch a ballet is a magical event in itself. The dressing up. The candlelight dinner. Walking hand-in-hand through the snowy streets. The time-honoured culture of ballet always promises an evening of enchantment.

Yet despite 25 years of history, BC Ballet is not what it once was. They’ve discarded the frilly tutus for a contemporary look, and lavish sets and decorations now adorn the stage, complemented by falling snow and beautiful costumes once unfamiliar to the tradition.

The ballet has evolved beyond that of an art form. It is entertainment as well.

The Nutcracker will premiere in Vancouver from December 29-Jan 1, 2011. Tchaikovsky’s timeless tale of true love, sprites and Christmas cheer has never been so theatrically expressed. Alberta Ballet will be behind the lavish performance under the musical accompaniment of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

In the words of BC Ballet, the new production promises “a fresh, vibrant magic to the mix, where every cent of the $1.5 million budget is displayed through the stunning set designs and elaborate costumes.”

Now is a good time to get tickets. http://www.balletbc.com/10/nutcracker2010.asp

As a mattress retailer, we’ve always wondered what kind of beds the stars sleep on. If you’ve ever been forced to spend the night on a sagging mattress, you know the creaks and cracks your bones can make the next day. Imagine that as a ballet dancer? It could be rather distracting.

If any of you know what kind of bed our prima donna sleeps on, we’d love to know. We’re guessing it’s a Beautyrest Black – and if not – it should be!

Adjustable Beds in Vancouver – For the Love of Reading

One of the best ways to drift off to dreamland is in under the spell of a captivating novel. Vivid with imagery and wrought with passion and big ideas, a compelling work of fiction can paint new worlds in our mind for us to explore in a lucid state. Or, an inspiring biography can fill our dreams with new ambitions and insights to the obstacles in our way, and offer solutions to overcome them.

Reading before bed relaxes the mind. It takes us away from our everyday concerns that can have us tossing and turning restlessly all night.

However, there are only a few positions to read comfortably in bed. You can stack up pillows behind you and lean against the wall. This can prove to be difficult if you have castors on your bed frame. Also, it demands that you sit almost completely upright, which is not as languid a state as some fiction requires.

Another option is to lie completely flat on your back and crane your neck upwards to the page. The problem with this approach is that it can get rather uncomfortable, and give you quite the neck-ache in the morning.

Any voracious reader should seriously consider an adjustable bed. Equipped with a remote control, an adjustable mattress can reposition itself effortlessly to maximize your reading comfort. Your back will be pleasantly reclined, and your feet nicely supported at the knees.

It’s a gentler, more relaxing way to read your favourite stories in bed, without straining your neck, or disrupting your partner.

Father Christmas is Making an Early Appearance

Fact: St. Nick enjoys his pancakes.

You always knew the ‘man in the red suit’ loved his cookies and milk and the odd sip of bourbon, but do you also know that Santa is a huge fan of the flapjack?

Breakfast with Santa, since its inception at the old Eatons building, has been a tradition in Vancouver for years. This year Santa will be making a pre-Christmas visit to sample breakfast wares at four different locations around the city:

1. The largest and most established event will be held at the Vancouver Convention Center. There will be a exquisite buffet offering, live entertainment and of course a visit from the jolly one himself. There are two dates planned for this event: December 18th and 19th.

2. For a more scenic meeting place, Grouse Mountain will be hosting a meet-and-greet in the Lupins Café at the top of the gondola. Buffet brunch will be provided, along with children’s entertainment. This event will run daily from December 15th to the 24th.

3. For a more community feel, both Douglas Park and West Point Grey Community Centre will be hosting Santa on the 11th of December. Crafts will be on display for purchase.

Have your child bring their wish list down and their appetite.

Moving Carefully

The first thing you did after buying your new home: purchased a new mattress from Simmons Mattress Gallery.

“If this is going to be a fresh start,” you thought to yourself, “I should probably buy a mattress that takes advantage of the increased bedroom size.”

We couldn’t agree more. That tired old relic you have been sleeping on for years needed to be tossed.

The Dreaded Hide-A-Bed

But what about all your other personal belongings you plan to transfer over to your new place? Have you made arrangements to move them? Are you stressed just thinking about the prospect of loading all your furniture into a rental van?

Rid yourself of this unneeded anxiety. Hire a moving company to transport your furniture to your new home.

Simmons Mattress Gallery suggests going with Careful Movers.

Careful Movers are a Western Canada based company that specializes in local and long distance moving across North America.

They offer free estimates and provide advice and assistance from your first consultation till the last box is placed inside your new home.

Like the mattress professionals at Simmons Mattress Gallery, the men and women that work for Careful Movers are all trained moving professionals.

Visit their website for more information or call them direct.

Their toll free number is 1-888-801-0581.

Don’t stress over your move. Let your mind focus on that beautiful new Beautyrest and all the tranquil nights you will spend on it.

Resting Up

With rain sputtering against your windshield, terrible rush-hour DJ’s on the radio and traffic lined-up farther than you can see, it’s nice to know, that after that long drive home from work, there are 800 perfectly designed pocket coils waiting to cradle your tired body to sleep; that is, if you own a Simmons Beautyrest mattress.

Simmons is the leader in providing a full night of undisturbed sleep.

We know you work hard. And we want to help you manage the precious time you have at home to naturally recharge your body’s internal battery.

Our patented non-flip pocket coils minimize the motion transfer between you and your partner. If one of you moves during the night, the independent coils react and cushion at impact, allowing little to no transfer to the opposite side of the mattress.

Sleep for a full eight hours and wake up ready to take on whatever crap assignment your boss throws at you.

And remember, the weekend is only days away. Make sure you have enough energy to enjoy it.

Sleep well. Sleep on a Simmons.

Frightening Drops, Zombie Clowns and Mini Donuts

Be afraid. Be very afraid!

Fright Nights are back at Playland. The fun and fear runs from October 16th to October 31st. Doors open at 6 pm, just the time of night when things start to get in-ter-est-ing!

New to Frightnights this year is the “Car-n-Evil,” hosted by the Scare Factory Inc. Scare is responsible for some of the craziest Halloween parties held at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion. The “Car-n-Evil” will feature a 3-D segment that is already getting rave reviews from early attendees. The main characters featured in the freak extravaganza are clowns.

(Warning: If a regular clown brings you to tears, this may not be the show for you. The line-up at the swings seems to be quiet…)

The wooden rollercoaster will also be fully operational. Try keeping your eyes open at the first drop.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online.

A Frightpass will get you unlimited access to five haunted houses and sixteen rides.

So bring a date or the family or that friend who wets herself whenever you sneak up behind her and come down for some fear-inflicted screams.

Bachelor Advice

You’ve just signed a two-year lease on an apartment in Yaletown. You finally get to move out of that dark basement just off Commercial. You’re young, single, and moving up in the world. But what now?

Before you go moving all your old stuff to your new pad, Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to offer a few hints on how to pimp your new bedroom:

1. Buy a new bed. One that says I am a lover not a wuss. Your single mattress from when you were sixteen is not going to fly. (Tip: the lower the frame, the more fun you can have without worrying about a falling Fail.)

2. Bed placement is key. Put the bed in the middle of the room. That’s where it belongs. Now lets get down to business.

Bed Placement is Key

3. Lose all memorabilia associated with your ex. That means get rid of the cute picture frame, the stuffed orca and that concert t-shirt you still go to bed in.

4. Go to a furniture store, we won’t mention the ‘I’ word, and buy some ambient lighting. Japanese style floor lamps are good for setting the mood.

5. Sell off your cumbersome stereo and buy a simple iPod dock with some decent speakers. Then download some Drake.

That’s a start. We’ll let you handle the rest. Just remember, start with the mattress.

14 Grinds in One Day!

Completing the Grouse Grind is a Vancouver merit badge that is mandatory for every active citizen living in our beautiful city.

It is 3 kms of hard, stair climbing cardio that rewards every finisher with a spectacular view of the city.

For some, the Grind is an annual tradition, for others, a weekly activity and still others do the Grind almost daily (during the months it’s open).

The last two groups are more likely to be registered for the timer program, an electronic database that keeps track of your performance and posts it on screens in the gondola chalet at the top of Grouse. These are the keeners who look to improve their performance on every outing.

Then there are the fanatics.

Sebastian Albrecht belongs to this group.

On Monday, Albrecht accomplished a feat that no other grinder has ever managed to do; he climbed the Grind 14 times in one day!

He began at 6:30 in the morning and finished his last trek up at 11:12 at night.

Albrecht and another climber, Vicki Mann, shared the previous record, of 13 assents in one day.

Albrecht was raising money and awareness for the charity, The Royal Le Page Shelter Foundation.

After the climb, Albrecht admitted to being “pretty exhausted. I mean, it just takes every ounce of mental and physical strength that you have, so I’m in need of recovery.”

Simmons Mattress Gallery hopes, for Albrecht’s sake, that the grinder was able to come home and pass out on a mattress worthy of his accomplishment. The only mattress that we could think of that even comes close is the Simmons Beautyrest Black; a rectangular layer cake of comfort and luxury.

“Indulge Sebastian. You deserve it.”

What’s Under Your Bed?

There are hundreds of places to hide unwanted items around the house, but somehow, under the bed always seems like the most logical option.

This week, it’s time to pull out your sleeping platform and discover all the random treasures buried beneath your mattress.

Take a log, send it in and receive two pillows with your next mattress purchase at Simmons Mattress Gallery.

Just to get you in the mood, here is a list of possible items you might discover:

1. The popcorn bowl from that movie night three weeks ago.

-You and your girlfriends had decided to watch the first “Sex in the City” to get you in the mood for the sequel. It was late, so you piled on top of your bed and indulged in some heavily buttered corn. Somehow the bowl got kicked under the bed.

2. Yearbooks.

-All five years of high school. Don’t open them up, unless you plan to spend the rest of the day laughing at that ridiculous haircut you had in Grade 9.

3. The pirate eye patch from Halloween 2008.

-Your date thought it was sexy.

4. Christmas wrapping paper.

-A classic under-the-bed find. You always end up buying more paper the following year, but somehow you still think you will use the leftover ends next year. (Tip: You never do)

5. Disreputable magazines.

-Enough said.

6. The “Bush X” concert shirt.

-Why did they need the ‘X?’

7. The box of letters from your last boyfriend/girlfriend?

-Throw them out!  It was three years ago. Sorry to be so direct, but you need to move on and focus on the now. Saving them isn’t helping anyone. If it was meant to be, you two will find your way back to each other. A saved letter from 2007 will not help the situation.

8. Dust

-Vacuum!

9. Socks

-A whole collection of singles. And you thought the wash machine just ate them…

10. A tired box spring that matches the worn out coils in your mattress.

-Get rid of them both. Simmons Mattress Gallery will set you up with all your sleeping needs. Come into one of our three convenient locations. And don’t forget to bring your own list of under-the-bed treasures.

Secrets Under the Mattress

Canadians Need To Leave Work at Work and Enjoy Their Leisure Time

Canadians are finding less and less time to relax and enjoy all the small things that make life so precious.

This is in accordance to the findings published by the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, last Tuesday.

The report, entitled, “Caught in the Time Crunch: Time Use, Leisure and Culture in Canada,” claims that non-standard work hours, increased caregiving for the elderly and technology’s firm grasp on our personal lives has diminished the idle time available to Canadians.

An increase in non-standard work hours, means Canadians are more likely to have small blocks of idle time that are less likely to coincide with the free time of friends and family. Evening work hours are especially damaging to the family dynamic.

With the baby-boomers in full retirement mode, more and more middle-aged adults are having to care for their aging parents. This too, is taking away from the time professionals could be spending with their children or relaxing on their own.

But the real killer affecting society is the technological umbilical chord connecting us 24 hours a day to our jobs; thank you Blackberry, for the subtle reminder that in today’s world, data sharing is much more important than simple experiences like exploring nature.

So what do we do to stop the trend?

Here are Simmons Mattress Gallery’s top 5:

1.  Have a time every evening when you turn off your work phone; not for an hour or two, but for the rest of the night. Make this time as early as possible.

2. Consider a job-share program with a co-worker. This would allow you to spend more time with your family or your own, quietly enjoying a book or a glass of wine. It would also mean a less extravagant yearly vacation and maybe a budget tweak.

3. Look into retirement homes. Yes, they cost a fortune, but it’s money you can spare and hopefully your parents are lucky enough to have a pension. It doesn’t mean you love them any less. They will understand.

4. Petition the government to upgrade employment standards. The message will be heard if the volume is there. Feel free to quote this article or the report itself.

5. Buy a new bed. It will help you secure the rest you need to operate during your busy day. Simmons Mattress Gallery is a great place to start your search. Find a little bit of time between the crunch and come check out our stock. And bring the kids. And maybe the parents too.

The Simple Pleasures

Five Outrageous Reasons to Buy a New Mattress from Simmons Mattress Gallery:

1. The smell of your old mattress.

-You don’t really know what that funky scent is from but it’s not good. Maybe it’s from the cereal you spilt, while watching the NFL in bed one Sunday. Maybe the smell from your forgotten gym shoes, the ones you stored under your bed for eight months, has seeped into the fabric. Or maybe it’s from that sweaty uncle who housesitted for you while you were in Europe. Whatever the case, no amount of Febreeze is going to hide it.

2. The size of your current mattress.

They say size doesn’t matter, but we all know they’re lying. Of course it does and sleeping on a mattress built for a vertically challenged 10 year-old is not healthy. You need room.

3. There are skid marks on the underside of your bed.

True story – there are people out there who use mattresses for surfing. (Many of these individuals tend to have a rosy tinge on their neck.) The act is preformed by towing a mattress from the back of a moving vehicle, while a rider kneels. The setting is usually a field or driveway. Don’t believe us? Watch this video.

*Simmons Mattress Gallery does not condone this activity.

4. Your significant other burned your last mattress on the front lawn.

-Was that really necessary? Breaking the Petro-Canada glasses you had since you were six was one thing… but the mattress? That’s just cruel. But then again, it was the scene of the crime.

5. That hole you cut to hide your baseball card collection

-First of all, are they really the most prized possession you own? And why the mattress? Well, we guess you found out the hard way (literally) that removing a section of coils from the inner lying would translate into a comfortless sleep. Try using the closet next time. Or if you feel like tearing something apart to build a secret compartment, go with the floorboards.

Priceless...

Whatever the case may be, Simmons Mattress Gallery has your new mattress ready and waiting.

Mattress Guilt

Always in search of the bizarre, Simmons Mattress Gallery has uncovered a rather racy sleep disorder: Sexsomnia. Sexsomnia is the act of engaging in sexual activity while sleeping. It is a form of parasomnia, unintended behaviour while sleeping. The most common parasomnia activity is sleepwalking.

People afflicted with sexsomnia might engage in a range of actions, with different degrees of severity. Actions include moaning, masturbation, groping of a partner or full intercourse. Individuals suffering from this disorder may also become violent in their sleep. This poses a serious danger for their partners.

When the individuals awake, they have no recollection of their actions, or only a blurry idea, as if recalling a dream.

Their partners provide the only conscious record of the event.

Sufferers might often feel emotions of anger, confusion, denial, frustration and or guilt.

There is also the very real possibility of legality issues ensuing from the sufferer’s actions. One case in Britain found the defendant guilty of rape, when the disorder was used as a defense in court.

Treatments include regular therapy, changes in lifestyle and the drug clonazepam. Alcohol before sleep has also been found to induce the disorder. It should be avoided when sufferers plan to share a bed with a new partner.

Scientists believe sexsomnia to be a genetic disorder.

The Sweet Sounds of “Mattress Music”

Simmons Mattress Gallery is obsessed with mattresses. We admit it. It’s what we live for and we’re not ashamed.

If we’re out at party and anyone in the room mentions the ‘m’ word – we swarm.

If we’re staying at a hotel and the front desk clerk asks us what size mattresses we’d like, well that’s an hour and a half conversation.

If we pass movers on the street discussing how they should stack the mattresses in their truck, we have a thousand suggestions.

This week we heard about a new album from the artist Marques Houston that sent us into hysterics: “Mattress Music.”

Marques Houston

Marques Houston Lounging

Yes, a whole album dedicated to mattresses.

We haven’t seen a track list yet, but these are a few possible titles that we hope make the final cut:

1. Sleeping Around the Showroom

2. First Night Bliss

3. Memory Foam of You

4. Undisturbed

5. Never Flip

6. Beauty-needs-a-rest

7. Wound Up Like a Pocket Coil

8. Go To Sleep (Roxette Cover)

9. E-Motion-All Separation

10. Stairway to Mattress Heaven

Look for Houston’s album in stores this July.

A Lesson in Mattress Shopping

This week Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to pass on six tips for the potential mattress buyer. We know mattress shopping isn’t something you do every weekend and it’s not as easy as buying groceries, so here are a few pointers:

1. The question is often asked of us: “How do I know when I should buy a new mattress.” Well if your mattress is five years or older, it’s probably time to consider evaluating your sleep. You should ask yourself the following questions; do you wake up with stiffness; do you sleep better when you’re not at home; is your mattress sagging or does it contain knotted lumps that are distracting when you sleep. If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, it is definitely time to visit Simmons Mattress Gallery.

2. Before you come, view the mattresses online at simmonscanada.com. Get a rough idea of what mattresses you would be interested in.

3. If you sleep with a partner, shop together! We cannot stress this enough. You will be spending a third of your day on your new purchase. Make sure you are both happy with your choice.

4. When you arrive at Simmons Mattress Gallery, consult one of the staff and discuss your sleep preferences. These individuals are more than salespeople, they are trained sleep professionals. They know their mattresses inside and out – literally.

5. Test sleep the mattress you are considering. This does not mean lying down for 30 sec. Take your time. Spend 15 or 20 minutes on each one. Sit up in the position you read in. Lie on your back, your side and your stomach. Snuggle with your partner. Are you comfortable in each position?

6. Finally, spend to the maximum amount that your budget can handle. Price is a reflection of quality. The more you spend, the more your body will thank you.

Good luck with your shopping and we will see you soon.

Entertainment in the Park

Stanley Park is the royal crown that sits above the City of Vancouver. Mounted in that crown is the Malkin Bowl, the jewel that dazzles from its brim.

The 1,000 acre park was established at Vancouver’s first city council meeting in 1886. It is larger than New York’s Central Park and contains over half a million trees.

Along with the forested areas are 350 acres of recreational space.

Included in these 350 acres is the legendary Malkin Bowl, an outdoor theatre built to resemble the famed Hollywood Bowl in California.

Surrounded by cedars, douglas firs, hemlocks and maple trees, the amphitheatre is the perfect setting for an outdoor concert or summer musical production.

This year’s summer concert series begins this weekend with the U.K’s Massive Attack playing Saturday night.

Other concerts to follow are:

May 31st – LCD Soundsystem

June 4th – Xavier Rudd

June 11th – Metric

June 13th – Metric

August 28th – Vampire Weekend

September 10th – The National

The theater is also home to Theatre Under The Stars or TUTS, as it is known.  This production company has been entertaining audiences since 1940, using local, up-and-coming stars, to headline their musicals.

Last year saw the success of both “Annie” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

This year the company will be presenting “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Singin in the Rain.”

Simmons Mattress Gallery would like to encourage residents of the Lower Mainland and visitors to our beautiful province to get out and experience the thrill of watching live entertainment in a stellar summer setting. We know your bed can be a strong draw, but listening to one of Canada’s hottest indie acts, in the company of raccoons, Canada geese, herons and distant beluga whales, is an opportunity not to be passed up lightly. So bring a blanket and your loved one and take in a show this summer.

You can purchase your tickets through Live Nation.

Secret Hideout Discovered in Bedroom

Simmons Mattress Gallery is always on the hunt for the most bizarre mattress story and this week we think we may have found a leading candidate.

Our real-life tale comes from the United States, in a small town called Marlborough, in the state of Massachusetts.

Like any city or town in the world today, Marlborough has its crime issues. And like Vancouver, a lot of these criminal acts are fueled by drug dependency. Our mattress tale deals with an individual suffering from an addiction to prescription pills.

Francis L. Davenport was arrested this week for breaking into a residence and stealing 53 clonazepam pills. He is also being charged with assaulting the owner of the house, who had an earlier restraining order filed against Davenport.

When the police were called to the scene of the crime, the victim gave them the assailant’s address. The victim also informed the police that Davenport would be hiding somewhere in his own bedroom.

Upon arriving at the house of the accused, the police found the bedroom empty. They then began a search of the premise. Their luck turned when they flipped Davenport’s mattress to discover a secret compartment.

Apparently the accused was prepared for a police search and had built a hideout using his bed frame.

Upon being discovered, Davenport leapt from his hiding spot, shouting the phrase: “I’m here.”

‘Quite the game of hide-and-seek.’

Lions Roam East

Football in British Columbia will have a new, ‘old,’ venue this spring as the B.C. Lions will be leaving their den and moving back to Empire Field.

The stadium will be a temporary setting, while B.C. Place receives a much-needed renovation.

Lions Football debuted at Empire Field in 1954.

The club has not played at the PNE grounds since 1983, when the Lions moved to B.C. Place.

The budget for the temporary stadium is 14.4 million and will include seating for 27,500 enthusiastic fans.

Unlike their seasons at B.C. Place, the well-rested Lions will now play football exposed to the elements, while 20,000 fans will receive cover.

This exposure may not be a factor in the spring, but come fall, the boys will be out in the cold.

The Felions will also have to adapt, as plans are all ready in the works for a new uniform. The warmer games will see the cheerleaders in black short shorts and tight fitting tops and the colder games will find them in capri pants and jackets.

The turf on the new field will actually be the old artificial turf used at B.C. Place. With all the rain we receive in Vancouver, a natural grass field might turn into a weekly mud fest.

The site will also be the home of the Whitecaps for part of their 2011 season.

WordPress Crashes On Mattress

The open blog site WordPress unexpectedly crashed on Friday March 26th. The site experienced unprecedented traffic to one of its blog pages, swamping the server.

The blog that caused the Internet fury, was a relatively small weekly, article driven page, on mattresses.

Apparently, a submission written by the mattress author went viral at around 3:30 on Friday afternoon. The article in question concerned a recent sighting of Johnny Depp in his pajamas.

Depp was filming his new film “The Tourist,” in Venice Italy, when he was spotted running through the streets in his nightwear. The mattress author caught wind of the story and posted it on mattressvancouver.wordpress.com.

TMZ is now interested in purchasing the site and Perez Hilton has inquired about a guest editor position.

WordPress has requested the blog page be moved to a new location that is capable of handling the thousands of readers the page is currently attracting.

We are glad you found the new page.

This is just a friendly reminder that Thursday is April Fools.

Plan something big, film or document it and send your work in and we will include your story in next week’s posts.

Our thousands of readers are waiting patiently for your submission.

Mattress FAQs

Q. When should I buy a new mattress?

A. Every eight to ten years. If your bed is stained, torn, or sagging, it’s time to start looking for something new.

Q. How do I comparison shop when the model names differ from store to store?

A. Look for benefits. If you know how to get the features you need from the construction of the mattress, that is the most important thing. When you shop, look for your comfort preference.

Q. How do I know which firmness I need?

A. It’s a personal choice. A firm bed does not always offer the most support. The best is one that evenly distributes your weight.

Q. My partner moves around a lot in the night, which mattress can help with this?

A. First off, make sure your mattress is big enough for both of you. Then, look into a mattress specifically designed for motion transfer, such as a Beautyrest or BackCare.

Q. How can I enhance the lifetime of my mattress?

A. Invest in a good quality mattress with a foundation, cover and mattress pad.

The DOs and DON'Ts of Mattress Shopping

DOs

1. Use a metal base frame for Full, Queen and King sized beds. Make sure it has a horizontal or vertical rigid centre rail, or metal/iron cross rails with a centre leg. A proper frame is important to not damage your product.

2. Use the matching foundation for your bed. Like star-crossed lovers, they are designed to be together.

3. Shop with your partner.

4. Look for value, not price. Find the bed that offers the benefits you seek.

5. Buy like you mean it. Your sleep is not a place to scrimp and save. Buy the mattress you can afford.

6. It’s all about you. Buy what feels good for you, not anyone else.

DON’Ts

1. Don’t just test your mattress by pressing on the side. Lay down, relax, roll around, and close your eyes. Imagine what it would be like to sleep on this mattress.

2. Don’t just look at coil count. It’s all about feel.

3. Don’t forget to check the warranty before you leave the store.

4. Don’t shop just anywhere. Shop at a reputable mattress store.

The perfect bed is bliss indeed.

The perfect bed is bliss indeed.

Buying a Better Bed

Here are three things to keep in mind when shopping for a better mattress.

1. Notice how well the bed conforms to the shape of your body. The higher the conformability, the less you will toss and turn.

2. Pay attention to weight distribution. Proper support is important for your spine, and the quality of your sleep.

3. Take note of the plushness and cushioning. The layers of foam, felt and natural materials and the coil construction will all affect your sleeping experience.

1. Pay attention to your body. How much sleep do you seem to need? If your body gets tired too easily during the day, then adjust, sleep more, or less, until you have reached your premium performance, and then sleep that much every night.

2. Have a regular schedule. Go to bed at the same time, and wake up at the same time, every day. Even on weekends.

3. Be continuous. Sleeping in one solid block is better for the body and mind.

4. Exercise. Stay fit.

5. Reduce stress.

6. Don’t smoke.

7. Have a proper diet. (Lots of fruits and vegetables.)

8. Reduce your caffeine.

9. Keep mentally stimulated throughout the day.

10. Take a warm bath before bed.

11. Establish a bedtime ritual.

12. Maintain a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom.

13. Avoid alcohol.

The 8” Pocket Coil

The Beautyrest Black has chartered new territory. By inventing a pocket coil that is 8” long, it is able to offer greater comfort, stability and support than ever before by ensuring that it is pre-compressed, to offer precise contouring to every inch of your body, all the while reducing ‘motion transfer’ from your partner. To top it off, the pocket coils are joined together, to guarantee you a great night’s sleep.

The Origin of Simmons

Simmons has been making quality mattresses since 1925, when it introduced the first Beautyrest mattress, featuring the patented pocket coil. It immediately became one of the most popular mattresses of all time.

The secret is in the pocket coils. No other mattress can compare to the patented technology. Three coils are woven together for increased strength and durability. Nestled within individual pockets, they ensure that there is never any motion transfer between partners.

After all, the good life should continue for 24 hours a day.

Why no bed is like a Beautyrest.

Some mattress stores will state that there is a comparable mattress for every model out there. But that’s simply not true. Nothing compares to a Beautyrest.

Only the Simmons Beautyrest has patented pocket coil technology (read about it here) and the rigorously tested and perfected craftsmanship found only in the most premium mattresses around the world.

At Simmons Mattress Gallery our customers ask for Beautyrest by name, and there is a reason for that – a quality guarantee that’s says it all – your beauty will last longer, and your body will feel more rested.

There is no rest like a Beautyrest.

Pocket coil? What’s a pocket coil?

You have probably seen the ads where a man in a white labcoat drops a black bowling ball on a mattress and none of the bowling pins are disturbed.  This, of course, is a simple way to show that your partner could be doing jumping jacks on one side of the bed and you’d never even know.

How is this possible? The answer is the revolutionary pocket coil technology found exclusively in Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. As you will see in the diagram below, the springs are not attached to one another, rather they rest independently in their own “pocket.” This allows enough ‘give’ so that when you put pressure on the mattress, on the coils you are touching are affected, while the rest of the bed remains still.
