The first branded items were produced with a similar symbol to inform consumers of the origins of the product. If a consumer purchased an item and was happy with the results, they could buy the same item again from the same producer if they remembered the brand symbol.

An early branded item still visible today, are the bricks used to build St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican. The church trusted the producer and only purchased bricks with the Antiche Fornaci Giorgi sign on them.

Branding today serves the same purpose. Companies build up a reputation for a product and then consumers grow to depend on the standard that company is known for.
