Parents everywhere look forward to those many ‘firsts’ that all children experience as they grow from drooling infants to self-empowered teenagers.

Local companies like the upstart Pedalheads Bike Camp, are teaching children as young as three how to ride a bicycle in a safe and controlled manner.

The company offers lessons at eight different levels, so children can continue to improve their riding and build on their awareness of safety issues.

The Pedalheads camps have been so successful that founder, Claudia Sjöberg, has now opened camps in Victoria, Calgary and Edmonton.

Sadly, this success means that more and more parents will miss one of those important firsts.

The reasons for outsourcing this moment are probably time, or lack there of. With less leisure time to spend with their kids, parents are concerned that their children might miss important life skills. The Pedalheads camps provide a friendly, non-rushed atmosphere that a single parent might not have the time to afford.

With this and other firsts lost to third parties, parents should try and make the most of the precious small moments that they spend with their young ones.

Reading before bed is an excellent activity to reclaim some of that lost time.
